Dear Comrades,
‪#‎IFWJ‬ had a very successful meeting of its 123rd Working Committee at Guwahati (Assam) on 15-16 March 2015. Com. K. Vikram Rao presided. Two hundred and ten participants came from 23 States and Union Territories. Happily the ‪#‎Manipur‬ (bordering ‪#‎Burma‬) and ‪#‎Tripura‬(bordering ‪#‎Bangladesh‬) unions attended after many years. The Working Committee welcomed the Manipur Hill Journalists Union, headed by Shri Sothing Shimray, President, and Shri S. Nengkhanlun, Secretary. Com. Debashish Majumdar, ex-General Secretary of the Tripura Working Journalists Association (‪#‎Agartala‬) addressed the session.
The three-day session was inaugurated by veteran ‪#‎Assamese‬ litterateur Shri ‪#‎LakshmiNandanBora‬, an eminent writer and journalist and once chairman of the ‪#‎Asom‬ ‪#‎Sahitya‬ ‪#‎Parishad‬. Senior ‪#‎tradeunion‬ leader of‪#‎StateBankEmployeesFederation‬ Com. Anup Kolita also addressed the session.
The venue of the session was at the picturesque Shrimant Shankerdev Shilpgram (village of art) in the capital city of ‪#‎Dispur‬. The auditorium was named after late ‪#‎BhupenBorgohin‬, (former president of the ‪#‎AUWJ‬, at the 26th plenary session of the IFWJ in Guwahati on 26-28 June 2003 conference).
Later the Congress Chief Minister of Assam, Shri ‪#‎TarunGogoi‬, invited IFWJ President K. Vikram Rao and IFWJ Secretary (East) Ms. Nomita Bora to discuss media issues. The Speaker of the Assam Assembly Shri‪#‎PranabGogoi‬ met IFWJ ‪#‎President‬ and Assam Union of Working Journalists officer-bearers at his official residence.
A highlight of the session was an all-India symposium on “The North-East and the National Media”, which was opened by Ms. ‪#‎Patricia‬ ‪#‎Mukhim‬, editor of the daily ‪#‎Shillong‬ ‪#‎Times‬ of ‪#‎Meghalaya‬ state. Shri Radhika Mohan Bhagowati, editor of the leading language daily ‪#‎Dainik‬ ‪#‎Assam‬, was the chief guest. Senior journalist Naba Thakuria conducted it. IFWJ leaders K. Vikram Rao and Parmanand Pandey were among those who spoke. Later the participants were taken for a darshan of ‪#‎Kamakhya‬‪#‎Devi‬ temple situated at ‪#‎Neelanchal‬ hills and also shown round the University of Science and Technology in Meghalaya new converted into Regional Institute of Science & Technology. Next day the Working Committee held its session on the steamer, cruising the mighty‪#‎Brahmaputra‬ River.
The IFWJ working committee, renewed the affiliation of the Utkal Journalists Association (UJA), headed by newly elected President Jumit Mangraj and General Secretary Benudhar Panda. The UJA has invited the IFWJ to hold its 124th session of the Working Committee at Bhubaneswar in June 2015, coinciding with the Lord Jagannath’s Rath Yatra (Car festival called Nabakalebar by local inhabitants).
Once again the IFWJ thanks the AUWJ office-bearers Keshab Kalita, Punlin Kalita, IFWJ Secretary Namita Bora, Jagdish Patgiri, Madhusudan Medhi, Jatin Bhagawati, Gitika Talukdar, Sanjib Phukan, Ramen Kalitam, senior journalists Nava Thakuria, Samudra Gupta Kashyap, for the successful Guwahati session.
